Honda's 0 series boxy electric SUV hits the road for the first time, followed by the new Prelude

Honda is pushing hard to catch up to the global EV transition. The company was spotted showcasing its upcoming "0 Series" SUV prototype on public roads in Tokyo for the very first time. Alongside the new SUV, a hybrid-electric Prelude was spotted as well, as it prepares to join Honda's lineup later this year.

We first saw Honda's new SUV in a concept form at the Consumer Electronics Show. The "0" SUV takes on a boxy, space-focused design as Honda sees its EVs as more than just transportation; it calls them "mobile spaces." The prototype, sporting a unique geometric wrap, was displayed at a Formula One event in Tokyo. We can notice that the SUV's shape has evolved a bit from its initial concept, but it keeps a distinct, almost chunky rear, designed to maximize interior space.

This focus on interior space is a key feature of the 0 Series. Honda wants to offer drivers and passengers a comfortable, versatile environment. The 0 SUV is expected to launch in North America next year, and it will be produced at Honda's EV Hub in Ohio. Following its North American debut, the electric SUV will be released in Japan and Europe.

The boxy design sure is unconventional, but it actually serves a practical purpose. By prioritizing interior volume, Honda wants to create universal EVs suitable for as many purposes as possible. This "one fits all" approach means that the new SUV's shape might take some getting used to.

In addition to the electric SUV, Honda is also introducing a hybrid Prelude. This model will expand Honda's lineup, offering a blend of electric and gasoline power. The new hybrid shows that Honda is playing for both sides while it tries to figure out which strategy will pay off in the long run.

Honda's focus on innovative design and interior space sets its new electric SUV apart from the competition. The production of the 0 series in Ohio will bring new jobs to the area and help the local economy. It should also keep Honda out of the reach of the new tariffs and make its cars a little bit more affordable.
