Tesla now forces Model S and X customers to purchase FSD

Model S and Model X haven't been performing well over the past couple of years, despite the minor refresh that both models received. And the latest move by the company risks cooling the demand even further. Described as a higher value package, the two models now come with a $10,000 price hike in the US.

For the extra cost you get the Full Self-Driving package included, which would normally be an $8,000 optional add-on and free lifetime Supercharging (as long as you don't sell the car). Premium Connectivity and a new Premium Service for the next 4 years are also included.

FSD doesn't need any introduction. The Supercharging, which was initially a free feature with Model S and X owners back in the day, has since been discontinued as Tesla deemed it "unsustainable". The only difference now is that the free charging at Tesla's Supercharger stations is only valid for the original car owner, and is not transferable with the car.

The Premium Connectivity feature means higher internet bandwidth, allowing live traffic visualization, satellite-view maps, video streaming, etc. The Premium Connectivity package would normally cost $10 per month or $100 per year.

Last but not least, Premium Service is a new addition that includes a tier and a windshield protection plan on top of maintenance. This means scheduled services such as wheel alignment, tire rotations, front camera cleaning, and replacement of HEPA filters inside the cabin, are free of charge for the next 4 years.

This all certainly appears as if Tesla is trying to sell more of its software features as buyers are clearly hesitant to purchase them on their own. The price hike may further reduce sales of the company's premium vehicles and they have been slumping lately even without that.
