The new Nissan Leaf might be hard to get initially as battery shortage plagues production

The new 2026 Nissan Leaf comes with a completely revamped design and is based on a new platform, so it's a significant upgrade over its predecessor. The initial reviews are very positive, praising its performance and competitive pricing.

However, there might be a small issue that could prevent it from becoming a sales success. According to a report by Nikkei, Nissan was forced to cut production in half. That won't affect the initial launch date, but the available units will obviously be much fewer.

The report points to issues with the battery supply. The battery manufacturer tasked with providing the high-voltage batteries inside the Leaf is having trouble delivering the required units.

Although Nissan hasn't officially confirmed the news, analysts believe it will impact the Japanese and US markets, as the Tochigi plant in Japan will produce several thousand fewer vehicles per month for the next few months. This will likely create a long backlog of orders.
