The retro-modern Renault 5 E-Tech available to order in UK with a $31,579 starting price

The Renault 5 E-Tech is bringing electric power to the masses. That's if you believe the official press release from Renault. With a starting price of £22,995 in the UK, this retro-modern hatchback is hoping to shake up the EV market. Orders open in January 2025, with deliveries expected to begin in the spring of the same year.

This isn't just a nostalgic rehash; the Renault 5 E-Tech is a fully electric vehicle built for the modern age. It comes in three trim levels – evolution, techno, and iconic five – each offering a unique blend of style and features. Buyers can choose between two powertrain options: a 120-hp motor with a 40 kWh battery providing a 190 miles of range, or a more powerful 150-hp motor with a 52 kWh battery that can achieve a range of 248 miles.

Both powertrain options come with Google-built-in services, EV-optimized navigation, and bi-directional Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing the car to power external devices. The "techno" trim adds a 10-inch digital driver display, adaptive cruise control, and multi-sense driving modes. The top-of-the-line "iconic" trim includes heated seats and steering wheel, lumbar adjustment, and advanced safety features like blind spot warning and rear occupant safety alert.

The Renault 5 E-Tech is designed with practicality in mind. The 11.5 ft³ trunk includes dedicated storage for charging cables. The lightweight build and agile handling should make the new R5 ideal for navigating city streets. Charging is also a breeze, with support for up to 11kW AC and up to 100kW DC charging. This means you can achieve an 80% charge in just 30 minutes using a DC rapid charger.

The car comes equipped with up to 25 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, blind spot monitoring, and hands-free parking. A new feature called My Safety Shield allows drivers to easily activate their preferred safety systems with the push of a button.

The Renault 5 E-Tech offers a compelling blend of retro charm, modern technology, and electric efficiency. The company boasts about its affordability, and sure - the starting price is nothing to scoff at. But as soon as you start ticking options, go for the 150-hp powertrain with the bigger battery, add a splash of color - you end up with a car costing over $41,000. That's a lot of money for what essentially is a city car. But it's a cute, funky EV, and it will keep Renault busy for years to come.
