Volkswagen ID.Cross debuts with a sub-€30,000 price tag and spacious interior

Today Volkswagen announced its fully electric, compact SUV, the ID.Cross. It shares many similarities with the ID.Polo from earlier this year, but this one feels a tad more premium in a way. Or at least that's what Volkswagen was aiming for.

Even though on paper the ID.Cross is compact, measuring 163.4 inches in length and having a 102.4 inches wheelbase, Volkswagen promises that the interior is quite spacious, at least compared to rivals such as the Renault 4 and the Kia EV2.

Additionally, you have a 475-liter cargo room behind the back seats and a 25-liter frunk that very few vehicles in this class have.

When it comes to the drivetrain, you can choose between three options, all of which are FWD. The entry-level solution has a 37 kWh battery with a 114-hp motor, while the higher trim gives you a slightly more powerful 133-hp motor paired with the same battery. The top-end configuration bumps up the power to 208 hp and gets a 52 kWh battery pack.

The most expensive configuration delivers 271 miles according to WLTP data, while the entry-level option can cruise for 196 miles on a single charge.

VW ID.Cross

When it comes to charging, the ID.Cross supports up to 90 kW with a capable DC fast charger. The bigger 52 kWh can peak at around 105 kW. In either case, Volkswagen promises 24 minutes of charging to get from 10% all the way up to 80%. The V2L functionality isn't excluded from the list of features.

Moving onto the interior, the ID.Cross surprises with premium-looking details and styling. Most of the surfaces on the dashboard feature cloth covers, while the hardware buttons are aplenty. No need to go through touch menus just to turn the AC on. Still, the 12.9-inch infotainment display comes as standard.

Depending on the trim you choose, you can also add matrix LED headlights, a panoramic glass roof, 12-way electric seats with massage programs, adaptive cruise control and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The base 37-kWh model with 144 hp will set you back €28,000, which is quite the bargain. Europeans should expect the vehicle to hit the streets sometime during this fall.
