$25,500 Dongfeng Nammi Box comes to shake up Europe's EV market

Dongfeng

The European electric car market is bracing itself for a potentially disruptive new entrant. China's automotive titan, Dongfeng Motor, has launched its new, low-cost EV, the Nammi Box, in Switzerland. With a starting price of just CHF 21,990 ($25,500), it's already generating a lot of interest as one of the most affordable electric cars on the continent.

Dongfeng, one of China's oldest and largest automakers, has partnerships with global giants like Nissan and Stellantis and is now following in the footsteps of BYD and NIO, venturing into overseas markets. Despite new EU tariffs on Chinese EV imports, Dongfeng has ambitious plans for Europe, including a potential manufacturing plant in Italy.

The Nammi Box sports a 42.3 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 193 miles. This puts it head-to-head with popular models like the Citroen e-C3, which has a slightly higher range of 199 miles, courtesy of its slightly larger 44 kWh battery. The 95-hp electric motor won't turn the 13.19 ft Nammi Box into a speed demon, but it should be enough to keep up with city traffic.

The interior is quite a surprise for a vehicle in this price category. There's a 12-inch center screen, while the driver gets a dedicated 5-inch instrument cluster. The seats are wrapped in leather, and the front ones fold flat to create a makeshift bed, which is a common feature in the Chinese market. The dashboard is wrapped in diamond-stitched leather, adding to the air of luxury, and a wireless phone charger is built into the center console. Not bad for a $25,500 car.

The Nammi Box is already available for reservation in Switzerland, but Dongfeng also has its sights set on the premium segment, with plans to launch its new electric SUV, Zhiyin, under its Voyah brand next month.

The EV price war in China is undoubtedly a driving force behind this expansion. However, Dongfeng's move also reflects the company's confidence in its products and its ambition to become a major player in the global electric car market. As the competition heats up, European consumers stand to benefit from greater choice and more affordable electric cars.
