Cupra

Cupra had a busy day today announcing its plans for next three years and committing to a complete electrification of its lineup. After spinning the company away from Seat following Polestar and Volvo's example, the company aims to sell 500,000 cars a year. So far it is on a good track with already 200,000 vehicles sold and €2.2 billion turnover in 2021 - not too shabby numbers for a 4 year old company.

Cupra is expanding its sales network with a global CUPRA Masters and CUPRA City Garages - showrooms and service stations that look to double the sales this year. Those aggressive plans will be supported by launching three completely new models - one plug-in hybrid and two all-electric cars.

Cupra Terramar is the brand’s first electrified SUV, it will be offered with a choice of ICE and plug-in hybrid drivetrains with the latter having 100km of electric range. At 4.5m length it is a larger SUV aimed at the higher end market and it will be manufactured in Hungary at Audi Gyor plant where Audi Q3 is made. It's not unreasonable to expect the two to share a lot of components.

The first all electric SUV from Cupra is the upcoming Tavascan, loosely based on the 2019 Tavascan Extreme E Concept. This SUV shares architecture with VW ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq iV and is coming to showrooms in 2024. Since Cupra has established itself as a performance arm of the VW Group, we can expect the Tavascan to come equipped with the drivetrain from VW ID.4 GTX - 295 hp all-wheel drive supported by 77kWh battery. In that trim the car should deliver at least 300 miles of range (482 km) and it should offer 6 seconds acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h.

The interior is showcasing the future “design language” of both Cupra and Seat cars, with new graphics and new central screen. That screen can adjust its angle - it can either face the driver or the passenger. Whether that option makes it to the production car is hard to tell.

The final announcement of the day was Cupra UrbanRebel - part of the Trinity concept based on VW MEB Small platform. At 4 meters long this car is clearly aimed at the city streets but it’s not the usual city slow. It will come with a 223 hp (166kW) electric motor powering the front wheels. The 57kWh battery pack is big enough for 320 km (200 miles) but there will be a “range” version offering up to 440 km - that’s 273 miles. Traffic light change will be dealt with a rather rapid acceleration of 6.9 seconds from 0 to 100km/h. It is shaping up to be a really quick and fun to drive electric Cupra.

UrbanRebel is the most important car for Cupra, it is an entry level model and it was meant to be priced around €20,000 but we will have to wait a little bit longer to find that out. The company wants to use the UrbanRebel to “democratize” urban electric mobility, it has 62 partnerships across Europe and together with VW it is investing additional €10 billion to speed up electric car infrastructure development.
