Wow, it's about time Tesla released an official API for dev! Their software ecosystem has been pretty limited so far. What took them so long?

This article is misleading. Apps aren't going on the cars infotainment systems like android auto, these apps are for tracking cars in a fleet.

The fact that this API is limited to enterprise entities with Tesla fleets just proves that Musk's focus is not on everyday consumers. It's a shame for those of us who actually want to use our Teslas to their full potential.
