Anonymous, 24 Jun 2024"No, I already said the US is also breaking the rules of free trade, so we agree on that.... moreI don't think that only countries with a solid automotive industry benefit from long term industry stability.
I live in Switzerland. No automotive industry here. Macroeconomically though our financial wellbeing is intertwined with that in France, Germany and Italy which do have automotive industry and are our export markets for a number of other products.
Diminishing consumer power in such markets will also hurt us eventually whereas their prosperity will have a positive effect on our economy.

If I am not mistaken, EU has higher export to US than US to EU. G

This is true only for those, who have that industry.
And I also said EU can support their industry instead of tariffs. China will retaliate, so It will hurt EU car makers.

Sinnaoi, 21 Jun 2024Have you heard of the world trade organization? Have you heard of rules of fair competition? O... moreAre you saying that planned Hyundai plant for $7.5 billion won't get any support from US government?

I find It ridiculous that supporting their own manufacturers is supposedly considered unfair practice.
The customer gets a cheaper car, that's hardly a bad thing.
If western automakers can't compete then their government can support them the same way as China supposedly did, but instead of this support they put additional tariffs, is that really fair to the customer?

BTW, I really want to know when there was a fair trade to begin with? From this fair trade only some countries benefit, the rest either don't have their own car makers or technologically are way behind, that can't be called as fair competition in my opinion.

Although China is not the only one breaking them... The US does the same with the IRA but in s more subtle way (financing consumers instead of companies)

remember that euro exports are higher in value/price compared to chinese exports.

is a porsche export worth the same as a mg export ? what happens to those lost sales ?

remember there are secondary consequences.
