Fearghast, 03 May 2025You do not need any of this to make a decent EV. VW is simply pushing big heavy EVs that are... moreIts not about decent EVs. Its about profitable EVs. Profitable EVs need 1. Fewer parts = 800V architecture. 2. Speedy manufacturing to keep up with demand= Gigacasting. 3. Non glitchy software = Fluid dashboard interface. VW has been making decent EVs that don't sell and cost more, because of poor manufacturing ethics.
Fearghast, 04 May 2025In that case, being European I am glad I am not part of this increased interest in big, heavy,... moreThe software quality of this Elroq is quite good, and VAG has made enormous progress since the launch of the ID.3. But if this Elroq sells well, it's also because it has good ergonomics, space for children's car seats, a large boot for a pushchair, very decent comfort and a turning circle of 9.30m, which is perhaps a record. It's perfect for manoeuvring around town. And it doesn't actually consume that much electricity, even though it's heavy. If it's heavy, it's because VAG has saved on steel, not because the platform is bad. But I'd like to come back to one point: VAG started with the ID.3, probably too early, with software that wasn't fully developed. But people preferred the ID.4.

Tesla is the whole other can of worms - the powertrain, suspension, firmware is great, but it is lacking in many other aspects like drive comfort and software quality - like maps.
There are other brands, luckily for everyone VW concern cars are not the only option in Europe.

This is where the competition comes in, on the compact SUV segment - a segment that Tesla is incapable of integrating - and on the charging capacity/price ratio, since it also turns out that Nio, Xpeng or Xiaomi won't be cheap. We're waiting to see the price of the MGES5, but I'd be surprised if it's less than 34,000.

I bet it might be a troubling for someone living in the US, but in Europe the range of pretty much every EV and speed of charging is more than good enough.
It might reach parity for some brands like VW, but I would not have my bar set so low when I pick my car.
I don't care for HUD, I have it on one of my cars, the other one does not have it. I would not base my decision to pick a car based on inclusion of the HUD in the slightest.
The same goes for ambient lighting, one of my cars has it ... I do not care, not like it enhances my driving experience in any way shape or form.

The arrival of Audi's compact saloon should also meet a key need in Europe.

VW is simply pushing big heavy EVs that are easy to design and make, but even on something as "trivial" as a big SUV, they managed to mess up pretty much every part of the equation, including infotainment software and firmware part of the software as well.
Their EV as subpar because of the bad platform design that makes their EVs incredibly heavy, they have awful packaging, subpar cooling system, heat pumps you have to pay extra, cost-cutting on basic functions, terrible UI and UX for the driver while driving the car etc. + they use even less efficient motors on lower trims (Elroq for example).
They might eventually get there, but it will continue to be a long and painful journey, full of lost jobs.
Want a profitable EV? 1. Use 800V platform, it requires less parts. 2. Use gigacasting. 3. Design a fluid dashboard interface, reduces parts required for dashboard. VW has not done any of this, their EVs are outdated and expensive because their tech is outdated. VW makes EVs like they make ICE cars, not gonna work
