In most of the chinese EREV the internal combustion engine can actually still be connected to the wheels to drive the car. The DMI system by BYD works like this. Yes, the focus is more on electric driving then it is with older plug in hybrids. Let's hope BMW stays away from this approach and utilizes the internal combustion engine indeed just as a generator.

But, with the recent introduction of their IX3 they clearly show that nobody has to be afraid of the range. It will depend a bit on the preferences of the target market.
