The latest spy photos of the next-generation Hyundai Kona, codenamed SX3, reveal that the South Korean automaker is completely transforming its small SUV. Instead of a simple mid-cycle cosmetic update, the brand is pushing large-scale structural changes to turn the vehicle into a Software-Defined Vehicle, hoping to elevate the model from an affordable entry-level vehicle into a premium, high-specification challenger that can attract buyers who usually look at larger vehicles.
The exterior design drops the unusual, split-light appearance of past models for a cleaner, more futuristic look. Engineers drew inspiration from off-road and electric vehicle concepts - the front features a horizontal light strip called the "Seamless Horizon," which gives the vehicle a wider and more powerful appearance. A taller hood line and a vertical front face change the shape from a hatchback style to a more traditional, rugged SUV profile. High-trim versions will include parametric pixel lighting details, connecting the style of this model to other EVs from Hyundai.
Inside the cabin, the changes maximize usable space and introduce advanced technology interfaces. The dashboard has a large display that combines the digital instrument cluster and the main infotainment system into a single unit, although there seems to be a smaller display behind the steering wheel. This setup provides an environment that drivers usually find in larger, more expensive EVs.
The interior layout specifically leaves room for physical buttons. The main screen handles navigation, media, and connectivity functions, but Hyundai engineers decided to keep physical controls for frequently used settings. Spy shots of the prototype show that this layout closely mimics the interior of the upcoming Ioniq 3 electric hatchback.

The designers moved the gear selector to a column-mounted stalk behind the steering wheel, eliminating the traditional center console setup and replacing it with a "bridge-style" console. The new architecture frees up the central area, allowing for large storage compartments underneath that can easily hold bulky personal items. Ambient lighting and neatly integrated air vents will give the cabin a premium feel.
The next-gen model introduces an updated powertrain strategy. A new 1.6-liter hybrid engine enters the lineup to satisfy the demand for efficient electrified options. It comes directly from the updated Kia Seltos and offers improved fuel economy alongside features typically found on pure electric cars - like the Vehicle-to-Load capabilities, which allow owners to power external electronic devices using the car's battery.

The powertrain options will most likely offer two distinct performance levels depending on the drive configuration: the standard front-wheel-drive hybrid version with 154 horsepower (115 kilowatts), and an electric all-wheel-drive system that places a small, dedicated electric motor on the rear axle. This all-wheel-drive hybrid variant increases the total output to 178 horsepower (133 kilowatts). Of course, battery-only models will be available as well - they will be sharing powertrain options with Ioniq 3.
The most important upgrade for the SX3 generation is the transition to the new "Pleos Connect" software platform. This system manages the vehicle's functions through software, making it a true Software-Defined Vehicle. Hyundai is using this to compete directly against its corporate sibling, the Kia Seltos, but the new Kona targets early adopters by focusing heavily on software capability, connectivity, and digital refinement.
