3,019 hp track version of the Yangwang U9 certified in China

Yangwang

A regulatory filing in China has pulled the curtain back on a new version of the Yangwang U9, and the numbers are something else. The upcoming U9 Track Edition, from BYD's luxury brand Yangwang, is a vehicle that pushes the definition of power into a new stratosphere with a combined output of 3,019 horsepower.

The information comes from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which approves vehicles for sale in the country. The filing details a pure electric sports car with four separate electric motors - one for each wheel. Each motor is rated at an impressive 555 kW. When you do the math, that adds up to a total system output of 2,220 kW, which translates to 3,019 metric horsepower, and it makes celebrated electric hypercars like the Rimac Nevera (1,914 hp) and the Lotus Evija (1,972 hp) seem almost modest.

The new Track Edition is a monumental leap over the current Yangwang U9, which is already quite a beast with its 960 kW (about 1,287 hp) output. The existing model already holds the record for the fastest production car in China, having clocked a top speed of 243.54 mph. The new filing lists the Track Edition's top speed at 350 km/h, which may be a preliminary or electronically limited figure, given its immense power advantage. The current U9 costs around $231,000, but pricing for this much more powerful version has not yet been announced.

Visually, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition doesn't stray far from the car we already know. The filing shows the familiar low-slung supercar shape, painted in a vibrant red with a gloss black styling package. Its purpose is made clear by its aerodynamics. The car comes standard with a large, fixed carbon-fiber rear wing and a huge rear diffuser with adjustable blades. The roof is also made of carbon fiber to keep weight down. Buyers will have options for even more aggressive aerodynamics, including an enhanced front splitter and an active electric rear wing.

The official documents provide precise dimensions for this powerful machine. The U9 Track Edition measures either 195.5 inches or 196.5 inches in length, depending on the aerodynamic package, with a width of 79.9 inches and a height of either 51.6 inches or 53.2 inches. It sits on a 114.2 inches wheelbase. The car tips the scales at 5,467 lb, which is heavy for a supercar but not unusual for a large, quad-motor EV. To handle the immense forces, it wears massive 325/30 R20 tires on all four 20-inch wheels, ensuring maximum grip.

The filing focuses on the new power output, but the existing U9 provides clues about the technology underneath. The current model uses an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, offering a range of 280 miles on the Chinese testing cycle. It also has an impressive 500 kW DC fast-charging capability, allowing it to charge from 30% to 80% in just 10 minutes. It's likely the Track Edition will feature similar, if not upgraded, battery and charging technology. The U9 is also famous for BYD's DiSus-X intelligent body control system, the advanced suspension that allows the car to drive on three wheels.
