Audi

During this year's ski world cup in Kitzbühel, Austria, Audi introduced a new Q6 e-tron-based offroad concept with some exciting tech on board. The star of the show is Audi's newly developed portal axles.

The Q6 e-tron offroad concept runs on two electric motors with a total output of 380 kW and can climb a gradient of up to 100%. The new portal axles are able to increase torque at the wheels by 50%, which is a massive jump from the 20-30% increase seen in conventional portal axles. Of course, this limits the top speed to 109 mph, but you wouldn't need more than that for offroad anyway.

The four portal axles in question are integrated into the wheel hub, which required a change in the suspension links as well. This way, the axles increase the combined torque to 13,400 Nm, around a 4,400 Nm gain.

Compared to the standard Q6 e-tron, the concept offers a 6.3 inches increase in clearance and 9.8 inches wider track.

Audi says this concept will become a reality and is even going to show off its capabilities on February 1 at the F.A.T. Ice Race.
