BYD unveils Xuanji A3 smart driving chip, promises accident-free roads

The global race for smarter electric cars is moving rapidly from battery technology to custom silicon. Chinese automotive giant BYD took a big step forward by starting production of its new, in-house developed Xuanji A3 assisted driving chip. Built on an advanced 4-nanometer manufacturing process, this new processor is the technological foundation for the brand's next-generation autonomous driving systems.

During the official launch presentation, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu emphasized that the company has deep roots in the semiconductor sector. The automaker employs an engineering team of more than 7,000 individuals dedicated entirely to chip research and development. This huge internal workforce allows the vehicle manufacturer to exercise total control over the development cycle, rather than relying strictly on external semiconductor suppliers.

The introduction of the Xuanji A3 answers a wave of custom driver-assistance silicon from domestic rivals. Competitors in the premium electric cars segment have already launched custom processors, such as Li Auto's Mach 100, XPeng's Turing AI, and Nio's NX9031. BYD claims the Xuanji A3 stands as the first mass-produced 4-nanometer autonomous driving chip originating from China. Officials confirmed that the computing unit is engineered specifically to support Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving solutions. The architecture will eventually find its way into the company's future robotaxi vehicle fleets.

A single Xuanji A3 chip delivers 700 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of raw computing performance. When configured in a triple-chip arrangement in a premium EV model, the system reaches a combined peak of 2,100 TOPS, placing a single chip on par with the Nvidia Drive Thor platform. It's worth pointing out that Xuanji A3's pure processing power falls short of some domestic rivals - Li Auto claims 1,280 TOPS for its Mach 100 processor, and XPeng reports 750 TOPS for the Turing AI chip.

Rather than focusing solely on peak raw output numbers, BYD leaned heavily on operational efficiency. The manufacturer announced that the power utilization rate of the new silicon increased by 100% compared to its previous generation of chips. The hardware fully accommodates ultra-high-resolution sensors, supporting up to a thousand-line LiDAR system, allowing the vehicle to interface with highly precise hardware, including advanced 2,160-line sensor developed by BYD-backed tech firm Robosense. This sensor setup provides much higher structural definition than the 896-line LiDAR system that Huawei supplies to vehicles under its HIMA automotive ecosystem.

According to BYD, the objective behind this heavy research spending is completely accident-free public transportation. To make safety technology accessible to everyday consumers, the automaker plans to implement its DiPilot 300 driver-assistance system across its entire vehicle lineup. Also known internally as "God's Eye B," the LiDAR-supported driving suite will be available even on the cheapest, entry-level electric cars. Customers buying budget-oriented EVs can opt to add the advanced safety package as a paid optional upgrade for a flat rate of RMB 12,000 - approximately $1,770.

The aggressive pricing strategy for advanced safety tech comes not a moment too soon for the company's domestic market performance. The latest monthly market registration figures from China EV DataTracker reveal cooling retail momentum at home. The tracking data reveals that the brand delivered 156,944 passenger vehicles in China during the month of April - a 19.8% year-over-year drop compared to the exact same calendar period from the previous year.

Democratizing highly capable autonomous driving features at an affordable price point should help BYD reinvigorate its domestic order books. The integration of the Xuanji A3 across high-volume electric cars could be a powerful differentiator in the world's busiest EV market, convincing safety-conscious buyers to return to the brand.
