Ford ends August in 2nd place in the US market with EV sales going up 4 times

Ford

Ford is putting a lot of effort into the EV market and it is clearly paying off. August saw a huge jump in sales numbers placing the company as second best selling EV manufacturer in the US.

The F-150 Lightning had a great month, despite production bottlenecks average sale time for a truck was 8 days from turning up on a dealer's lot. All together F-150 sold 2,373 units which was 200 more than in July.

The demand for Mustang Mach-E shows no signs of slowing down. The car has been on the market since last year and the company is still struggling to keep up with the growing number of orders. August saw 3,120 units sold which is over twice as many as it was sold in August last year. Unfortunately, waiting lists are growing longer with 7,800 new orders placed last month alone.

The third EV in Ford’s US portfolio is the humble E-Transit which despite its rather small sales numbers, manages to dominate the electric van market with over 90% share. 404 units sold in August was enough to crown it the commercial EV category winner. How long before other companies jump on the electric van bandwagon?

All those sales secured Ford a second place in August behind Tesla, but its sales show the true gap between Tesla and the rest of the field. The estimated sales put Tesla at around 47,000 vehicles with the Ford in second place selling 5,896 electric vehicles - that’s nearly 8 times less. Clearly, there is a lot of work ahead for Tesla’s competition.

The sales numbers are growing despite prices increasing considerably, it is a good sign for the manufacturers but not a good sign for customers. Waiting times for new electric cars will only get longer and the prices will keep climbing. The promise of cheap and affordable EVs truly is out the window. The demand for EVs is growing and it will not slow down for next few years, this gives the manufacturers no incentive to lower prices.

With the US market now technically protected from foreign manufactured EVs, thanks to the new EV tax credit rules, the American customers will have to put up with less choice and stick to American made electric cars or will have to pay more for European, Korean and Chinese products. What may be good for the economy is not always good for customers, at least in the short run.
