Geely

Those of you who follow the automotive industry up close know that it's nearly impossible to miss Geely, a Chinese conglomerate that owns many car brands, some of which specialize in EV production. Volvo, Polestar, Smart, Lotus, Zeekr and Lynk & Co are all under the Geely umbrella. During this year's CES in Las Vegas, USA, the head of global communications announced the company's plans to enter the US market.

Geely announces plans to enter the US EV market

That comes as quite a surprise, given the escalating trade war between the US and China. The former effectively banned Chinese EV imports via massive tariffs and introduced regulations on Chinese software. Then again, Volvo and Polestar are both sold in the US, and they have local production plants, so it will be a relatively easy entry for other Geely vehicles, tariffs aside, of course.

There's a big caveat to this, though. Ash Sutcliffe, head of global communications for Geely Holding Group, said that the company will announce more details around its US expansion in the next 2-3 years. Notably, he said, "announce", not an actual launch.

One would assume that Geely is waiting for a new administration in the White House that's more inclined to do business with Chinese companies.

In any case, Geely showcased some of its EV models to tech journalists attending CES 2026, and when Sutcliffe was pressed to comment on the potential hurdles around the tariffs, he brushed them off by saying that Geely is an international company that knows how to overcome such issues and also comply with various regulations around the world.

They better be aggressive with pricing now that subsidies are gone and fuel prices are very low across most of the US. Hybrids and EV sales tend to tank when fuel is cheap. Building a brand and image is difficult and expensive in the US as well. I...
