Here's what Tesla's new vision-based auto parking looks like in action

Tesla

Tesla took its sweet time developing an auto park function for its cars that have only cameras (the so-called "vision-only" vehicles), but it's finally here. So if you have a newer model Tesla, you can now hopefully take advantage of what is a pretty magical feature that some of Tesla's competitors have already had.

It's been about two years since Tesla decided to move away from ultrasonic sensors to a camera-only system, and we assume development of this vision-only auto park function was anything but easy, having taken this long. If you're wondering how it works, the video below will show you - it's quite simple.

Tesla autopark for vision only non-USS Model Y! At long last! So far I'm pretty impressed. It's way better than the old autopark.@AndyZeGerman @28delayslater pic.twitter.com/Hi25l7T1XL

The new feature looks different when compared to the existing Autopark function in Teslas that have ultrasonic proximity sensors. The parking spots are highlighted differently, and once they are, you can then select the one you want on the screen. Following that, the car will park itself in your desired spot.

In the future, Tesla is likely to launch something it will call Tap to Park, which will let you tap on the desired parking location, get out of the car, and it will still park itself. That's coming down the line, according to clues in Tesla's app. For now, reviews of the new vision-only auto park feature seem pretty good overall, so at least the two-year wait appears to have been worth it.
