Lynk & Co joins China's EV price war with a $15,200 Z20

The electric car market in China is no longer just competitive - it has turned into a battleground where price is the primary weapon. The latest automaker to enter the fray is Lynk & Co., which just launched two new, more affordable versions of its Z20 compact EV. The company is offering these new models with limited-time pricing that brings the cost of entry down to a remarkable RMB 109,900, or about $15,200.

How does a company shave thousands off an electric car's price tag? The answer lies in a few carefully considered adjustments. Lynk & Co created these new budget-friendly Z20 (marketed in Europe as Lynk & Co 02) variants by trimming specifications in key areas.

The motor power on the new models is reduced from 250 kW (335 hp) to a still respectable 175 kW (235 hp). The battery pack is also smaller, resulting in a range decrease from 329 miles down to 267 miles on a single charge. The standard 19-inch wheels have been swapped for 18-inch ones, and the premium 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, once standard, is now an optional extra. A new "Fiji Green" color option also makes its debut with these models.

Some features were trimmed for the price, but the Z20's core identity remains surprisingly intact. The new variants keep the brand's "The Next Day" design language, which includes sleek features like hidden rain gutters and frameless doors and mirrors. The vehicle's dimensions are unchanged, measuring 175.6 inches in length, 72.6 inches in width, and 61.9 inches in height, with a 108.5 inches wheelbase that provides ample interior space.

Inside, the cabin experience is nearly identical to the more expensive models. Drivers are greeted by a high-tech dashboard featuring a large 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 13.8-inch head-up display, and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

One of the Z20's most unique selling points, the flexible "Dynamic Island" in the center console, has also survived the price cut. This modular space can be transformed to serve as anything from a pet carrier to a small coffee station, adding a layer of personalization not often seen at this price point.

The new Z20 models are built on the advanced SEA architecture, featuring a MacPherson front suspension and a sophisticated five-link independent rear suspension for solid handling. Braking power is supplied by Brembo ventilated disc brakes and a Bosch One-box brake controller. The car has earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, thanks in part to a body composed of high-strength steel, seven standard airbags, and a multi-layered battery protection system.

Since launching last December, Lynk & Co has delivered about 27,000 Z20s. By introducing more accessible versions, alongside a fresh software update that adds remote parking, an enhanced sentry mode, and new apps, the company is making a bold play to attract a much wider audience and give the Z20 a fighting chance to thrive in the world's busiest EV market.
