Mazda debuts EZ-60 electric SUV with two powertrains

Mazda's latest electric vehicle EZ-60 was just launched in China and will have its global debut in 2026 under a different name: the Mazda CX-6e. This mid-size electric SUV enters the fiercely competitive market with an aggressive pricing strategy and a choice of two distinct powertrains, giving buyers options that many rivals do not.

The EZ-60 is the second new-generation EV from Mazda to launch in China, following the EZ-6 electric sedan. Both vehicles are the result of a partnership with Chinese automaker Changan and are built on its EPA architecture. This collaboration allows Mazda to offer the SUV in two flavors: a pure all-electric version and a range-extended hybrid.

For the Chinese market, prices are remarkably low, ranging from RMB 119,900 to RMB 160,900. At current exchange rates, that's approximately $16,800 to $22,600. The international pricing will certainly be different, but this starting point is aggressive enough to get anyone's attention, regardless of their country of residence.

Visually, the SUV is unmistakably a Mazda. It carries the brand's signature design philosophy, adapted for the EV era. The front features a closed-off grille common to many electric cars, but with a twist - a light-up Mazda badge. Slim daytime running lights and split headlamp clusters give it a modern, focused look.

At 190.9 inches long, 76.2 inches wide, and 63.8 inches tall, with a generous 114.3 inches wheelbase, the vehicle's dimensions put it in the mid-size category. Touches like hidden door handles, electronic side mirrors, and standard 19-inch wheels (with 21-inch wheels optional) complete the sleek, contemporary look.

The Chinese customers can choose the powertrain that best suits their needs. The pure electric model is a rear-wheel-drive EV powered by a single 190 kW motor. It uses a 77.94 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a claimed range of 373 miles based on China's notoriously optimistic CLTC testing cycle.

The second option is a range-extended EV, which uses the same 190 kW electric motor but pairs it with a smaller 31.73 kWh battery and a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that acts solely as a generator. This version offers 124 miles of pure electric driving before the gasoline generator kicks in to recharge the battery, extending its total range to apparently over 620 miles.

The interior of the EZ-60 is a big departure from Mazda's traditionally conservative cabins, leaning heavily into technology. The centerpiece is a massive 26.45-inch 5K floating central screen, powered by a cutting-edge 4nm processor for snappy performance. A 50-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) comes standard, projecting vital information directly onto the windshield.

For customers looking for an even more futuristic experience, a 100-inch 3D-HUD is available as an upgrade. Comfort is taken care of courtesy of "zero-gravity" front seats that offer heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A 23-speaker premium audio system with Dolby Atmos support delivers an immersive listening experience.

As it is the case with most new EVs in China, the EZ-60 comes packed with driver-assistance technology. Multiple radars and cameras help it provide Level 2 autonomous features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated parking.
