New MG 07 fastback arrives in two versions full of premium tech

MG is expanding its EV footprint with the introduction of the latest fastback sedan, the MG 07. The new model made a formal appearance in China's NEV (New Energy Vehicle) purchase tax exemption catalog, pointing to an imminent launch. With its core technical specifications officially registered with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, MG seems to be using the new EV as a pivotal addition to its platform. The MG 07 is going after a mainstream market, promising to balance consumer budgets with advanced engineering that usually belongs to premium segments.

The timing of the reveal is no coincidence - the automaker desperately needs a meaningful sales recovery. Data from the China EV DataTracker shows that MG managed to sell 17,570 vehicles in May 2026 - a respectable 12.0% increase compared to the month before. The numbers suggest a steady volume improvement, but the company experienced a huge demand drop earlier, with sales bottoming out at 7,017 units in February 2026.

Affordability will be the main selling point for the new MG 07. The manufacturer will enter it into the highly contested price bracket ranging from RMB 150,000 to RMB 200,000 - that's $22,150 to $29,540. Placing the vehicle in this sweet spot should help MG to appeal to everyday buyers who want all the benefits of the latest tech without paying luxury brand prices.

To accommodate different driving habits and charging infrastructures, the automaker will offer the MG 07 with two distinct types of powertrains. Buyers who prefer pure electric cars can opt for the battery-electric variant. This version has a 67 kWh battery pack that feeds a rear-mounted electric motor. Produced by the Shanghai Automotive Gearbox Company, this motor delivers a peak power output of 176 kW. Depending on the specific trim chosen, the battery provides a driving range of either 379 miles or 404 miles under the notoriously optimistic China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) standard.

Recognizing that some consumers still feel anxious about relying entirely on battery charging networks, MG has also developed a plug-in hybrid version of the sedan. This practical variant combines a 30 kWh battery pack with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The traditional internal combustion engine generates 82 kW, and it works in tandem with a 152 kW electric drive motor. For daily commuting, this hybrid setup offers a useful all-electric range of 115 miles when measured under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTC) rules.

Visually, the 07 abandons standard boxy designs in favor of a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette. The fastback layout has a smooth transition where the rear windshield blends seamlessly into a large, panoramic glass canopy covering the cabin roof. At the front end, the design sports distinctive C-shaped lighting modules containing multi-focal elements. These eye-catching light clusters sit above a full-width lower ventilation channel that helps cool internal systems. To improve the airflow and aesthetic cleanliness, MG used semi-hidden, flush door handles alongside alloy rims exclusive to this model.

Beyond the sheet metal, the real story of the MG 07 is its digital brain. A roof-mounted LiDAR sits at the top of the windshield, acting as the main sensor for the vehicle's pilot assistance hardware. This is the first sedan from the brand to use the advanced Momenta R7 smart driving framework. The system draws its processing power from an X7 application-specific integrated circuit. By using a sophisticated "world model" software framework, the car calculates localized driving variables in real-time. This high-level tech integration lets the brand build a solid, domestic alternative to self-driving options offered by global tech companies.

As the automotive industry shifts toward sustainable energy, models like the MG 07 show how quickly premium tech is filtering down to budget-friendly segments. By packing a decent range and autonomous driving hardware into a vehicle that costs less than equivalent offerings from the competition, the automaker is rewriting the rules of what buyers should expect from affordable EVs. If the fastback performs as well on the tarmac as it does on paper, it could easily help MG cement its sales comeback and improve its foothold in the international arena.
