Platforms are about cost reduction from shared parts and shortened development effort. A "platform" might be shared to create a pickup, SUV, sedan, and convertible. A "flexible" platform might sometimes enable swapping among drive-systems for a given vehicle. A flexible platform must also consider many other criteria beyond drive-system such as weight, suspension dynamics, brands, etc. Excessive sharing and/or excessive flexibility can lead to poor compromises. Optimizing a vehicle design is often more outstanding when the artificial constraints from sharing and flexibility are relaxed. A final note: a first-class second-row for adults is very different then a superficial second-row to reduce insurance premiums. The details are important.
