It does not have to be just VW case where Škoda, VW, Seat, Cupra, Audi etc. share most of the components and platforms, but I can be Toyota/BMW, Toyota/Subaru cooperation on things like Supra, BRZ/86.
Without these tied projects, they would not even make the car, because they would lose a ton of money on it.
Some Audi EVs are using Porsche platforms - simply because they are better and most likely cheaper compared to Audi developing their own.
Not so black and white ;)
