MG

MG has officially opened orders for the all-new MG4 with an aggressive new pricing strategy and a technological ace up its sleeve. This isn't just a minor refresh; it's a complete relaunch designed to capture a big piece of the budget-friendly electric vehicle segment.

MG has slashed the cost of entry for the MG4 in a big way. Pre-orders are now open with a starting price of just RMB 73,800, which translates to approximately $10,270. This represents over a 47% price reduction compared to the starting price of its predecessor. The new lineup includes four pre-sale variants, with prices set at RMB 73,800, RMB 81,800, RMB 90,800, and topping out at RMB 105,800 ($14,720). MG has even suggested that these prices might be reduced further when the vehicle officially goes on sale.

Inside the cabin, the MG4 debuts a brand-new cockpit system developed in partnership with the tech company Oppo. This MG×Oppo system seamlessly integrates smartphone functionality with the car's interface. Drivers can use voice commands, gesture navigation, and sync applications directly from their phones to the car's main screen.

Underpinning the MG4 is SAIC's E3 pure electric architecture. The three lower-priced models come equipped with a 42.8 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack. This setup provides a respectable CLTC-rated range of 272 miles.

The highest-priced variant features a larger 53.9 kWh LFP battery, extending the CLTC range to 329 miles. All versions are powered by a single electric motor that produces 120 kW and 184 lb-ft of torque, allowing the car to reach a top speed of 99 mph.

But the most significant news, aside from the price, is the introduction of a semi-solid-state battery option, a first for a mass-produced electric car. Supplied by QingTao Energy, this advanced battery contains only 5% liquid electrolyte, making it inherently safer and more stable. MG demonstrated this confidence at the launch event with live puncture resistance tests.

This new battery has an energy density of 180 Wh/kg and offers a CLTC-rated range of 334 miles. Crucially for drivers in colder climates, MG reports it retains 13.8% more range at 32°F compared to traditional LFP batteries. The final pricing for this high-tech "Anxin" edition will be announced in September, with deliveries starting later this year.

The updated model is larger than its predecessor and key rivals. It measures 173 inches in length, 72.5 inches in width, and 61.1 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 108.3 inches. For comparison, the BYD Dolphin Surf is shorter, suggesting the MG4 may offer a more spacious interior and greater cargo capacity.
