But while automakers in the West spent years talking up pure battery solutions, Chinese engineers recognized something possibly a bit more practical: families hitting the open road do not want to spend their vacations staring at charging status bars. Xiaomi's latest Skynomad N90 Max is apparently the answer to those worries.
To prove what this large SUV could do in a real-world scenario, Xiaomi's marketing deputy GM, Xu Jieyun, skipped the computer simulations and went for a genuine endurance run. Four adults climbed inside, loaded an extra 110 lb of luggage into the back at Shanghai's 5G Future Center, pointed the nose toward the brand's car manufacturing facility in Beijing, and set off on a 1,230-km run on a single charge and one tank of fuel.
This time, there was no hypermiling trickery here. The cabin climate control was set to a comfortable 75°F, tire pressures sat at a normal 2.9 bar, and the big SUV cruised at a highway average of 65 mph in Eco mode with Xiaomi's "Hyper Autonomous Driving" system responsible for the steering duties.
Running purely on electrons, the Skynomad covered 201.1 miles before waking its combustion engine - achieving 69.7% of its declared CLTC pure electric rating while posting an energy consumption of 19.7 kWh per 62 miles. That zero-emissions leg alone handles the weekly commuting grind for most suburban households without burning a drop of petrol.
Better yet, once the full 1,230-km route was finished, the digital cluster still showed 34 miles of remaining range. That's an honest real-world range of roughly 798 miles - about 75.3% of its advertised CLTC figure under a full passenger load.
In the new Skynomad 90 Max, the propulsion is purely electric: a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain dishing out 310 kW gives this sizable machine plenty of instant muscle to dispatch sluggish traffic without breaking a sweat. Stashed between the frame rails is a 76 kWh ternary NMC battery pack supplied by CALB, capable of pulling off a 20% to 80% DC fast charge in 18 minutes. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from Changan subsidiary Dongan never turns the wheels; its job is to act as an on-board generator, settling into an average fuel consumption rate of 0.237 ft³ per 62 miles once the battery is empty.
The Skynomad N90 Max measures an imposing 208.1 inches in length, 78.7 inches in width, and stands 71.9 inches tall, all resting on a generous 121.3 inches wheelbase. It is a full-size three-row hauler that puts passenger comfort, hushed acoustic insulation, and expansive digital real estate far ahead of low-slung, lap-time-chasing theatrics.
When Xiaomi first burst into the automotive arena with the rakish SU7 electric sedan, it proved it could craft a sleek, razor-sharp performance car capable of turning heads. But low-slung sports sedans are emotional purchases. To truly dominate the volume charts, you need a high-riding, cavernous family cruiser that can tackle holiday road trips across vast countrysides without needing a spreadsheet of charging stops. Expanding into the EREV space with the Skynomad is far from a compromise - it is commercial pragmatism.
According to data from China EV DataTracker, Xiaomi Auto delivered 31,267 units in July 2026 - a solid 2.7% year-over-year increase. Achieving that steady volume before the SUV even arrives in showrooms is a pure brand pull, and when deliveries of the Skynomad N90 Max begin rolling out this autumn, those delivery numbers are bound to climb substantially.
The synergy between hardware and software really proves its worth out on the open road.
