Rivian unveiled the R2 in March, and people seem to love it, given how many reservations the company has received for the model. The R2 is now rumored to have switched the location of its charging port.
According to a user on Rivian's forum, at the Rivian Space in Pasadena one of the company's VPs confirmed that the charging port on production models will be at the rear on the driver's side.
This is a pretty big change, considering that when the car was announced Rivian was adamant that the position at the rear on the passenger's side was very intentionally chosen in order to make charging at street chargers easy (this apparently is a thing in Europe where the R2 will also be sold).
We're not sure what will happen to those Europeans now, will they have to park on the wrong side of the road in order to reach the street-level chargers? Unfortunately, we don't know. But what is clear is that American Rivian R2 owners who want to use Tesla Superchargers without double-parking will be very, very happy with this change.
Perhaps, and we're just speculating here, Rivian can appease everyone by fitting the R2 with two charging ports, one on each side? Or, in lieu of that, can we hope for different positions based on market? We'll have to wait and see, as the R2 is only supposed to arrive on streets in 2026.
Rivian R2 will "reportedly" have a steering wheel that is round. Perhaps, and we're just speculating here, Rivian can appease everyone by fitting the R2 with two steering wheels, one on each side?
open the trunk, let us see a "spare tire well" under the trunk floor, post the pic as proof
