Skoda unveils sketches of the Elroq

Skoda

Skoda, the name synonymous with practical and affordable cars, has been slowly teasing us with details of its upcoming all-electric compact SUV, the Elroq. With its official debut scheduled for October, Skoda has released exterior sketches, giving us a sneak peek of what to expect. And it's safe to say the Elroq is ready to rock the compact SUV segment.

The Elroq, slated to be the electric counterpart of the popular Karoq SUV, is set to make a bold statement with its design. Skoda has adopted its new "Modern Solid" design language for the Elroq, introducing features like the "Tech-Deck Face," essentially a sleek and fully covered grille that signifies its electric heart. It also sports split headlights with Matrix LED technology, giving it a futuristic and sharp look. The profile of the Elroq bears some resemblance to its larger sibling, the Enyaq, while the rear comes with a spacious tailgate and familiar taillights, echoing Skoda's wagon heritage.

While the sketches offer a glimpse into Elroq's design, it's important to remember that they are often exaggerated. Skoda has also shared images of a camouflaged prototype, providing a more realistic view of its proportions. The Elroq will also introduce a new Timiano Green color, complemented by Unique Dark Chrome accents, in an effort to distinguish it from the crowd.

Previous teasers have given us a glimpse into the Elroq's interior, which will feature sustainable materials like recycled post-consumer clothing, Recytitan (made from 78% recycled PET), and Technofil (polyester and recycled Econyl yarns). Skoda will offer four interior themes - Loft, Lodge, Suite, and Studio - to cater to different tastes. In addition, the Elroq will feature a modern digital cockpit and the latest VW Group tech, promising a connected and tech-savvy driving experience. Practicality remains a key focus, with a spacious five-seater cabin and a generous 16.6 ft³ of cargo space.

Although the official debut is a few weeks away, Skoda has already shared details about the Elroq's powertrains and battery options. Built on VW Group's MEB platform, the Elroq will offer a choice of 55 kWh, 63 kWh, and 82 kWh battery packs, with the largest pack providing a WLTP range of up to 348 miles. The Elroq will be available with either single (rear-mounted) or dual electric motors. The rear-wheel-drive versions will produce 168 hp (125 kW) or 282 hp (210 kW), while the all-wheel-drive version will deliver a combined output of 295 hp (220 kW).

Skoda seems to be ticking all the right boxes with the Elroq. It combines a striking design, sustainable materials, cutting-edge technology, and practicality, all wrapped in an electric package with plenty of power and decent range. With the Elroq, Skoda is setting a new standard for compact electric SUVs. But you can bet your lunch money that Elroq won't be as affordable as old-school Skodas.
