Stellantis

In a world eager for cleaner, more sustainable modes of transportation, Stellantis, a leading multinational automaker, has rolled out its all-new STLA Medium platform. This innovative platform is designed specifically for all-electric vehicles, spanning passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs in the C and D segments of the market.

Why focus on the C and D segments? These segments constitute almost half of the global car market, hence, Stellantis' new platform aims to electrify this vital portion of the automobile industry. The group presently offers 26 vehicle nameplates within these segments, and moving these models to the STLA Medium platform could potentially lead to the production of up to two million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) annually.

What makes the STLA Medium platform stand out? It's designed to provide what consumers are increasingly looking for in an electric vehicle. From an impressive range of over 435 miles per charge to efficiency, affordability, and, of course, the pure joy of driving, the STLA Medium platform is designed to deliver.

Now let's look under the hood, so to speak. This platform will form the foundation for a host of models across various brands. Configurable as either a front-wheel drive with a single motor or an all-wheel drive with dual motors, the power output will range from 160 to 285 kW depending on the model.

One of the key features of the STLA Medium platform is its best-in-class driving range. Stellantis plans to offer two main battery options, providing over 310 miles and 435 miles of driving range respectively. These options come with up to 98 kWh of usable battery capacity, depending on the choice of the pack. Additionally, the company's latest fast-charging technology will allow users to recharge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in just 27 minutes, a charging rate of 2.4 kWh per minute.

However, Stellantis' ingenuity goes beyond offering powerful performance and convenient charging. The company has also focused on ensuring efficiency in battery packaging costs and production volumes. The design of the battery pack is constant across different versions, simplifying production while maximizing space inside the vehicle and improving ride handling with a low center of gravity.

But what about the future? Stellantis promises that its new platforms, including the STLA Medium, will be future-proof, adaptable, and ready to accommodate future battery chemistries and types. This includes solid-state batteries and those free of nickel and cobalt.

The introduction of the STLA Medium platform is part of Stellantis' broader ambition to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2038. This vision includes a full transition to an all-electric lineup in Europe by 2030 and a 50 percent electric sales mix in the United States.

This is just the beginning of an electric revolution, and Stellantis' new platform is set to underpin many vehicles at the heart of the most important segment of the global car market. Clean, safe, and affordable mobility is not just a distant dream but an achievable reality. And while Volkswagen is whining about its sales falling and claims people no longer want to buy electric cars, Stellantis drops the mike - and prepares to take VW’s place.
