The 2027 Rivian R1S has captain's chairs in the second row

Today, Rivian has introduced the 2027 model year R1S and R1T. The headline feature for the R1S is that you can now order it with captain's chairs in the second row. There are thus six seats in the car, and to reach the third row you have a center pass-through in between the two captain's chairs.

Each captain's chair has an individual armrest that stows flush into the seat when not in use, and a push-to-release cup holder that folds down from the inside edge of the seat. Both seats are heated, fold flat, and retain full car seat tie-downs. Since there's space between them in the middle, this makes it easier to load stuff like skis, surfboards, and other long gear.

The option to get the R1S as a seven-seater will remain available by the way. In order to get the captain's chairs you will have to purchase the Sound And Vision package ($2,500) and then pay either $1,500 or $2,000 for the chairs on top of it, depending on which trim you choose.

Speaking of trims, Rivian is simplifying the R1 trims. There are three of them now: Premium, Performance, and Quad. Premium has dual-motor all-wheel drive, 533 hp, 610 lb-ft of torque, and a zero to 60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. An optional power upgrade increases the output to 665 hp and 829 lb-ft of torque, and the zero to 60 mph time drops to 3.4 seconds. A Long Range option on Premium promises up to 410 miles of range on the R1S and 420 miles on the R1T.

Performance has three motors, 850 hp, 1,103 lb-ft of torque, and a zero to 60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. The EPA estimated range is 371 miles. Quad is the top trim, with four motors, 1,025 hp, 1,198 lb-ft of torque, and a zero to 60 mph time of 2.5 seconds in the R1T. This one completes a standing quarter mile in 10.5 seconds. The range is 374 miles on both the R1S and R1T.

Interior options include Black Mountain and Ocean Coast for Premium, while Performance and Quad get Slate Sky Signature, Black Mountain Signature, and Ocean Coast Signature.

The new cars are available to configure now, with the R1S starting at $83,990 and the R1T at $79,990.
