Togg

Togg is a Turkish joint venture of companies ranging from investment funds to electronics and manufacturing, its full name is Turkish Automobile Joint Venture Group Inc and it was founded in 2018 with the aim to design and manufacture electric cars in the country.

The company announced initially two models - a sedan and an SUV, with three more models to follow for a five car portfolio by 2030. The SUV is first out of the gates of the new factory in Gemlik that was just opened last week. Togg is building a battery factory in a joint venture with Farasis Energy from China right next to its Togg Technology Campus and plans to open a fast charger network with 1,000 stations across the country.

Togg C SUV may have the least inspiring name since it refers to the automotive segment the car fits, but the design really is surprisingly nice. The car has good proportions, it has a nice mixture of design cues from Mercedes and Audi and it was drawn by Pininfarina. Initially the batteries and electric motors will be sourced from foreign companies but Togg, being a national company, wants every component of the car to be manufactured in Turkey.

The car is based on an in-house designed platform that will be shared between all five models in the future. There are no official specifications available yet but the company did confirm the base model will use a single electric motor with 200 HP which will drive rear wheels. The dual-motor 400 HP AWD version will be introduced later next year.

The standard version of the car can apparently accelerate from 0 to 100 km/k in just 7.8 seconds while the AWD version does it 4.8 seconds. The two battery options will deliver either 300 km or 500 km (186 and 310 miles respectively) of driving range according to NEDC.

The Togg C SUV will become available in the first quarter or the next year with orders to open in February. The starting price for the base model is around €48,500 and the company will sell directly to customers, using the tried and tested Tesla sales model. The first showroom will open in Istanbul later this month and eventually Togg will have 20 showrooms across the country.

The new factory plans to manufacture between 17 and 18 thousand vehicles next year with a target capacity of 150,000 units once at full manufacturing speed. 51 percent of materials used in the production is sourced from Turkey but Togg will increase that number to 65 percent in the next year or so.

This being a national automaker, the official unveiling was full of politicians and President Erdogan was at hand and taking test drives, in fact the President himself placed the first order for Togg C SUV. If you have two hours to spare, below is the video from the launch. It is full of interesting info about the company and its background but the car itself features only for a few minutes:
