Volvo

Volvo surprised viewers during its ES90 sedan presentation with a brief glimpse of its upcoming EX60 electric SUV. This new compact crossover, the electric sibling to the popular XC60, is set to launch next year and is already attracting a lot of attention among electric car enthusiasts.

The brief teaser, hidden in the ES90 reveal video, revealed a few key design elements. All we got to see was the covered rear of the EX60 with angular upper taillights, reminiscent of the larger EX90, flanking the rear window, transitioning smoothly to the car's outer edges. The teaser also highlighted shapely rear haunches, a recessed liftgate, and a black rear bumper with a chrome horizontal accent. These design cues suggest a modern and refined look for the EX60, aligning with Volvo's trademark Scandinavian design.

The EX60 will ride on Volvo's entirely new SPA3 platform. This highly scalable architecture will underpin all future Volvo models, promising significant cost reductions and much improved performance. Volvo confirmed that the first EX60 test vehicle has already been built and driven, which suggests that development is well underway. The SPA3 platform, an upgrade from the SPA2, suggests that the EX60 may share components with the EX90 and ES90, potentially including battery technology and powertrain options.

Detailed specifications will stay under wraps for a while, but the EX60's platform and design tease point to a competitive SUV. Volvo's focus on cost reduction with the SPA3 platform should translate to lower prices for consumers. The EX60's launch next year will add another interesting option to the growing lineup of electric cars, as Volvo is steadily pushing to become an EV-only company.

The gas-powered XC60 recently got a facelift. This included styling tweaks and a new infotainment system. The introduction of the EX60 means a fully electric alternative to one of its best-selling models. The EX60's brief appearance has already generated plenty of excitement, and we hope more details will be revealed in the coming months.
