Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and one of the key factors influencing buyers is the EV's range. That range, in turn, depends on the vehicle's efficiency, which is driven by mechanical and electrical components, but the big issue is aerodynamics. Audi has always been at the forefront of automotive design, and its latest creation, the A6 Sportback e-tron, is the best proof of its commitment to pushing the boundaries of aerodynamic efficiency.

With a remarkable drag coefficient (Cd value) of just 0.21, the A6 Sportback e-tron proudly holds the title of the most aerodynamic Audi ever produced. This impressive achievement sets a new benchmark for the brand and places it in the lead within the entire VW Group. Its sibling, the A6 Avant e-tron, comes with a Cd value of 0.24.

Achieving such results requires a lot of attention to detail and a collaborative approach. Audi's aerodynamics experts, Andreas Lauterbach, and Matteo Ghelfi, worked closely with the design team to optimize every aspect of the vehicle's shape. From the initial design sketches to countless hours spent in the wind tunnel, the team tirelessly refined the A6 e-tron's form to minimize air resistance.

The A6 Sportback e-tron's sleek and streamlined silhouette plays a crucial role. The slim greenhouse, sloping roofline, and carefully sculpted surfaces all contribute to reducing drag. Even the smallest details, like the air curtains and rear track width, were optimized to enhance airflow efficiency.

The A6 e-tron's aerodynamic enhancements extend beyond its exterior. The underbody, often overlooked, actually plays a significant role in reducing drag. The engineers optimized the underfloor design and added the rear diffuser. It is exposed to direct airflow due to the smooth underbody, and it further contributes to improved aerodynamics.

The wheels also play a crucial role in aerodynamic performance. Specially designed 19" and 20" aero wheels, along with 21" wheels featuring aero blades made from plastic, help to minimize turbulence and improve airflow around the A6 e-tron. As a result, Audi has come up with a range of wheels where even the least aerodynamic option still boasts impressive efficiency.

The culmination of countless simulations, wind tunnel tests, and collaborative efforts is a vehicle that looks great and achieves exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. It takes a lot of tedious jobs, a lot of refining of smallest details, but the result is what every EV buyer wants - longer range without the need for heavier battery.

"Aero" is Euro code-speak for a cramped 2nd row. In AI-speak,- a poorly constrained objective function.
