AUDI

The upcoming all-electric AUDI E5 Sportback isn't just another Audi model adapted for China; it's the debut model under a fresh "AUDI" emblem. This new brand identity sheds the iconic four rings and its German heritage. This venture says it follows the "in China, for China," directly catering to the tastes and demands of the world's largest electric car market.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published the homologation application for the E5, essentially giving the public a detailed look at the car's specifications ahead of its official market launch in mid-2025.

The AUDI E5 Sportback measures 192.2 inches in length, 77.2 inches in width, and 58.2 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 116.1 inches. Prospective buyers will have choices when it comes to power, as AUDI filed for four different trim levels. The motor outputs will range from 220 kW, to 300 kW, 386 kW, and a very potent 579 kW - that's more power than the European Audi e-tron GT S has to play with.

A lot of the critical components for these EVs are sourced from SAIC and its affiliates. The electric motors, for instance, are mostly produced by Huayu Automotive Electric Systems, a subsidiary of the SAIC Motor Group. Only the base 220 kW motor variant will be supplied by United Automotive Electronic Systems, a joint venture involving Bosch.

Powering the E5 Sportback is a ternary lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides (NMC) battery pack manufactured by SAIC Power Battery. This is another joint venture between SAIC Motor and CATL, one of the world's leading battery producers. The vehicle uses an 800-volt architecture, and AUDI claims the E5 Sportback can achieve a maximum range of 478 miles under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Perhaps more impressively, the company states that the car can add 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.

The regulatory filings also confirmed that the SAIC Volkswagen Automotive will manufacture the E5 Sportback at its No. 1 factory in Anting, Shanghai, which also serves as SAIC-VW's headquarters. Images accompanying the filing show the car will feature a lidar unit mounted above the front windshield, indicating advanced driver-assistance systems, and will offer a choice of 19-inch or 20-inch wheels.
