BMW

The new BMW iX3 is probably the most important electric SUV for the brand ever. It has big shoes to fill in - it signals the start of the company's "Neue Klasse" era. This new vehicle, designed to compete with rivals like the Audi Q6 E-tron and Polestar 3, is currently undergoing its final testing in South Africa, suggesting an official unveiling is imminent.

The iX3 is built on BMW's new Gen6 platform, which promises big improvements in range, efficiency, and cost. The new platform features 800V electrical architecture with faster charging and will support batteries with 20% greater energy density. BMW is touting a 30% overall increase in driving range and a 20% boost in efficiency. These are big claims, and we can't wait to put these to test.

The Gen6 platform also incorporates a new generation of lighter, more efficient electric motors. While the platform can support up to four motors in high-performance models, the initial iX3 offerings are expected to feature single and dual-motor configurations. The design of the 2026 iX3 is inspired by the Neue Klasse Vision X concept, which showcased a bold and modern aesthetic.

The timing of the iX3's unveiling is already generating a lot of interest. With BMW having previously used the Munich Motor Show for major reveals, the September event is a strong possibility. The iX3 is set to hit the markets in 2026.

It is worth pointing out that the existing ICE-powered BMW X3 will continue to be sold alongside the new iX3. This dual-offering approach allows BMW to fulfill the ever-changing consumer preferences. The fourth-generation X3, which includes petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options, was only launched in June of last year.
