BMW

A new platform announced by BMW during the Q1 earnings call, will focus on a midsize car segment and will be manufactured at the new factory in Hungary. When it hits the market in 2025 it will be initially used for the 3-series segment meaning all future BMW i3 and cars related to it will be based on it. The interesting bit about this announcement is the fact that it indicates BMW’s change of tactics.

The prospect of all-electric M3 is real The prospect of all-electric M3 is real

BMW initially planned to carry on manufacturing petrol and diesel cars as well as hybrids and all-electric vehicles and they all meant to share a common platform. This new announcement signals a change of plans since the Neue Classe is going to be exclusively designed for electric cars with no option for fossil fueled or hybrid versions. And it will be a dedicated 3-series platform - it won’t be shared either with smaller or larger vehicles and it won’t be adapted either.

Will the 2025 i3 look anything like this? Will the 2025 i3 look anything like this?

It’s really important news showing BMW is paying attention to a fast changing market, the move away from fossil fuel powered cars has accelerated and BMW is making sure it stays at the forefront of the change. The German automaker plans to sell 2 million all-electric cars by 2025 and is well on the way to achieve more than half of its global sales to be only electric by 2030. Dedicated 3-series BEV platform means we will finally see an electric M3 as the CEO confirmed that one of the reasons behind the new design is to have new high performance all-electric models. 2025 can’t come soon enough.

Just for fun - who remembers BMW E1? Just for fun - who remembers BMW E1?

Design recycling at its best... but I guess the automakers would call it inspiration ;)

Funny how the E1 lead to the front at the Fiat Punto and for the rear, at Audi with the A2 !
