BYD

Chinese automaker BYD introduced the third-generation version of its popular compact crossover, the BYD Atto 3. The updated model brings more range, faster charging capabilities, and a new mechanical layout with the same focus on buyers looking for affordable electric options.

In its domestic market of China, the vehicle sells under the name Yuan Plus. The new version launched on May 21 and introduces significant technological changes beneath the skin. BYD transitioned the compact SUV to its latest e-Platform 3.0 Evo, moving away from previous generation hardware to offer better efficiency and performance.

The design of the new vehicle builds on the existing styling direction of the brand, which designers call the "Dragon Face" theme. The updated crossover features a flatter design at the front end, narrow headlights, and semi-hidden handles on the doors. A full-width light bar sits across the rear of the vehicle, using a distinct woven pattern for its illumination elements.

The vehicle measures 183.7 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, and 65.9 inches tall. It features a wheelbase of 109.1 inches, which helps maximize interior space. Storage options include a newly added 6.4 ft³ front trunk that features a "knock-to-open" mechanism. The standard rear luggage compartment provides up to 26.5 ft³ of cargo space.

BYD offers the updated model in four distinct trim levels in China. Prices start at RMB 119,900 ($16,600), and the top-shelf version reaches RMB 149,900, or approximately $20,800. These competitive prices keep the new Atto 3 in the budget-friendly EV segment.

One major mechanical change involves the drivetrain layout - the third-generation vehicle shifts to a rear-wheel-drive configuration. Power comes from a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, available in two outputs: the lower versions produce 200 kW, and the higher variants deliver 240 kW of power.

Energy storage comes from a choice of two second-generation Blade Battery packs. The smaller pack offers a capacity of 57.5 kWh, while the larger option provides 68.5 kWh. Depending on the chosen battery, the driving range sits at either 336 miles or 391 miles under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). This is an improvement of up to 75 miles of extra range compared to older versions. The vehicle also adds a new "flash charging" system to reduce time spent at charging stations.

The platform relies on a MacPherson suspension system at the front and a five-link independent setup at the rear axle. Driving dynamics receive support from an intelligent damping body control system, specialized torque control software, and a tire blowout stability control safety system.

The interior received plenty of attention during this update. Drivers will notice a larger central screen that operates on updated software, a new steering wheel with two spokes, a head-up display, and a gear shifter moved to the steering column. A 50W wireless phone charging pad is also present. Comfort upgrades include ventilated and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 16-speaker sound system, and a refrigerated storage compartment.

Cabin storage includes unusual additions like a small box for figurines on the dashboard, storage drawers located under the rear seats, an integrated holder for tissues, and a case for glasses. Buyers can choose from nine different exterior colors, including dual-tone options like blue, pink, or green.

The company also focuses heavily on driver assistance tech. High-trim versions can include an optional advanced system that uses a LiDAR sensor and 30 separate sensing units. This technology provides navigation assistance on both highways and city streets, alongside an automatic parking system.

The new Atto 3 launch comes at an important time for the carmaker. Sales figures from the China EV DataTracker show that local sales for this specific model line reached 5,111 units in April 2026 - a 21.9% drop from the previous month and a 58.4% decline compared to the same month last year. The model made up 3.4% of total brand sales in April. Despite recent local slowdowns, the vehicle has been a massive global success since its original debut in 2022, crossing 1.1 million total international sales across 116 countries.
