China's automotive powerhouse, Changan (one of three companies behind Avatr 07), is making big moves towards its global expansion. It established Changan Automobile Deutschland GmbH in Munich, showing its serious intent to conquer the European electric vehicle market. Having a German subsidiary is a key part of Changan's broader "Vast Ocean" strategy, which aims to establish the brand as a global EV leader.
The company has set a target of selling 480,000 vehicles overseas in 2024, a significant jump from the 228,000 units sold in the first seven months of this year. By 2030, Changan plans to sell a staggering 1.2 million vehicles overseas, contributing to a total global sales target of 5 million units.
Europe is a crucial market in this strategy. Changan is gearing up to introduce its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) models to the European market in the latter half of 2024. The company is particularly bullish about its NEV prospects, aiming to sell 750,000 units globally this year alone. This includes significant contributions from its Deepal and Nevo brands, which are expected to sell 280,000 and 250,000 units, respectively.
While its European expansion is in the spotlight, Changan is also making strides elsewhere. The company's first overseas production base in Thailand is nearing completion and is expected to start full production in early 2025. Changan is exploring the possibility of setting up production bases in Central and South America, as well as in Europe itself.
Changan's 'Vast Ocean' plan is more than just a sales strategy; it's a vision for the future of mobility. The company is betting big on electric vehicles and is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to become a major player in the global EV market. Whether it can achieve its ambitious goals is a completely different story.
There's no doubt the global automotive landscape is watching this development with keen interest. With its vast resources, technological prowess, and clear determination, Changan is a force to be reckoned with. The 'Vast Ocean' plan may just be the beginning of a new era for this Chinese automotive giant.
