Hyper GAC

Chinese brand Hyper, sitting under GAC Aion, is making a major announcement this week. On April 12, Hyper will announce its new solid-state EV battery.

Solid-state batteries aren't new, but we are yet to see them enter mass production. Hyper says its batteries have 100% solid-state electrolyte, which significantly increases energy density, meaning the battery packs more power in the same physical space. It also promises enhanced safety and the ability to withstand a wider range of temperatures.

Chinese automaker Hyper to unveil solid-state EV battery

Hyper is just one of the Chinese EV makers pushing the boundaries of battery technology. The company follows Nio with its semi-solid-state battery already in production and IM Motors (under SAIC Motor Corp) that announced the L6 with 130 kWh solid-state battery and a CLTC range of over 620 miles, but is yet to bring it to the market.

The solid-state batteries could well be a crucial piece of the puzzle for widespread EV adoption. However, they have been on the verge of mass production for the longest time now and the constantly moving goalposts start to raise suspicion if large-scale commercialization is at all possible. GAC Aion aims to offer them in production vehicles by 2026, so it's not really bringing us closer to the goal.

On Thursday Hyper will offer a deeper dive into the specifications and capabilities of its solid-state technology and we'll keep you posted if it makes any significant annoucnements.
