Chinese VW ID.7 is longer than its European version

Volkswagen

Volkswagen Shanghai has applied for a sales license for the VW ID.7 in China, following the standard procedure. The filing released by the MIIT reveals that while technically the European and Chinese versions are similar, there are quite a few differences. In fact, the VW ID.7 made by Shanghai Volkswagen is the second ID.7 available in China, and third overall.

Due to Volkswagen’s two separate joint ventures in China, there are two different ID.7 models available on the market. The first one to debut last December was the ID.7 made by FAW-VW and marketed under the name ID.7 VIZZION. That model measures 195.1 inches in length, 73.3 inches in width and it stands 60.5 inches tall. It is only a few mm shorter than the European ID.7 and it's most likely due to a slightly different bumper.

The ID.7 just approved for sale in China is made by Shanghai Volkswagen, and according to the MIIT listing it is 197.9 inches long making it the longest ID.7 on the market. It is only a couple of mm wider and it sits just one mm closer to the ground. While the width and height differences can be dismissed as marginal, the extra 2.56 inches got our hopes up for a moment - was it the LWB ID.7? The answer is a resounding no - a quick look at the spec sheet reveals identical wheelbase but much bigger front and rear overhangs and the file photos reveal substantial design differences.

The Shanghai-made ID.7 sports unique front and rear bumpers, it has different headlights and taillights, and even its window line is different - rather than carrying on straight from the front to the rear of the vehicle, it ends up halfway after the rear door and inches upward.

The differences don’t stop there. The Shanghai ID.7 is powered by a single electric motor with a maximum output of 170 kW - that’s 20 kW more than the ID7 VIZZION comes with and 40 kW less than the European ID.7 has onboard. While the VIZZION comes with the larger 84.8 kWh battery, which is available in the European ID.7 Pro S and has 86 kWh usable capacity, the ID.7 made in Shanghai is keeping that detail secret for now.

One model, two markets, and yet three completely different vehicles. Just as in the case of the 308 hp VIZZION AWD, the all-wheel-drive dual-motor powertrain is on its way to the Shanghai-made ID.7, while in Europe it’ll be known as ID.7 GTX. How much power the Shanghai and European AWD versions will sport is anybody’s guess - although the 250 kW ID.Buzz GTX is an obvious hint.

If EU will sanction BYD and other Chinese manufacturers, well, brace for impact, Volkswagen.
