Ford to double production of Mustang Mach-E and triple production of F-150 Lightning

Ford

Ford has a couple of decent electric cars in production - Mustang Mach-E has proven to be very popular and the F-150 Lightning is simply a runaway success. But having good electric cars means nothing when you cannot deliver them fast enough to customers. Many of them prefer to fill the pockets of competition rather than wait for months on end.

This is about to change, Ford announced it will increase production of many of its models but the important news is that it will manufacture way more of Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning.

President of Ford, Kumar Galhotra, made quite an obvious statement earlier on when he said that increased production will benefit both the waiting customers and the company. That one was kinda obvious but we’re glad Ford realized that - as they say, better late than never.

Following the recent changes at its Mexican factory, Ford is doubling the hourly production rate of the Mustang Mach-E. This will bring the production target to 210,000 vehicles this year which is sure to make a lot of customers happy.

After shutting down production of the F-150 Lightning to investigate battery fire at the factory, the company identified several issues and apparently all of them have been addressed. The production is planned to be resumed on March 13 and the team at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, where the F-150 Lightning is assembled, plans to build 150,000 trucks by the end of this year.

Ford sold 3,600 F-150s in February alone and in 2022 the total sales reached 15,617 units which is not a huge number but the production ramp up was painfully slow. The company plans to invest $2 billion and bring in extra 3,200 workers to speed up the production. Ford E-Transit is benefiting from the new production push as well, the Kansas City facility where the van is made expects to hire extra 1,100 workers thanks to the $95 million investment.

This is the kind of news we expect to see plenty of for the next few years. 2023 will probably be the “year of no return” as we’re seeing companies committing to the EV transition and trying to make up for the lost time. Best example is Toyota and its monumental u-turn when it comes to EV manufacturing but there are more coming. Those who jumped on the EV train early on will be pushing now for as fast expansion as it is possible.
