Geely Galaxy E5 launches in China - an affordable electric SUV with global aspirations

Geely

Geely has taken wraps off the Galaxy E5, a new all-electric compact SUV destined to eventually hit overseas markets. With an attractive starting price of just $15,750 (RMB 112,800), the E5 is here to make electric mobility accessible to a wider range of consumers.

The Geely Galaxy E5 comes with a single electric motor that delivers a peak power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 236 lb-ft. This is enough for the E5 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds.

The E5 is available with two battery pack options: a 49.52 kWh pack offering a CLTC range of 273 miles and a larger 60.22 kWh pack providing a CLTC range of 329 miles. As usual - the CLTC numbers need to be taken with a sizable pinch of salt.

The Geely Galaxy E5 is the first model to feature Geely's innovative Aegis Short Blade Battery. This lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cell boasts an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and a remarkable longevity of up to 3,500 charging cycles. Geely claims that this translates to driving 1 million kilometers (620,000 miles) with minimal impact on range.

Without a doubt, one of the most appealing aspects of the Geely Galaxy E5 is its competitive pricing. With a starting price of RMB 112,800 (around $15,750), the E5 undercuts many of its rivals in the electric SUV segment. Geely plans to offer the E5 in both left-hand drive and right-hand drive configurations, making it a truly global model.

While specific details about the interior and features of the Geely Galaxy E5 are scarce at this time, Geely is known for equipping its vehicles with modern technology and comfortable interiors. Given the E5's positioning as a mainstream electric SUV, we can expect a well-rounded package with a focus on practicality and value.

The Geely Galaxy E5 will face stiff competition from established players in the electric SUV market, such as BYD's Yuan Plus. And yet, with its competitive pricing, innovative battery technology, and global aspirations, the E5 is really well-positioned to carve out a decent niche for itself in the global electric vehicle market.

This electric SUV is a significant step in the democratization of electric mobility, offering an affordable and practical electric SUV with global appeal. Although that affordability will very likely change as the E5 reaches different markets - it's hard to imagine Geely selling a family electric SUV in Europe for less than $20,000.
