GM confirms - next-gen Chevrolet Bolt only in EUV version

General Motors has officially confirmed that the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, set to launch in 2025, will be available exclusively in the larger Bolt EUV variant. The decision comes on the heels of remarkable sales figures for the Bolt lineup, making it the company's most popular electric vehicle despite its age. GM's move to streamline its offerings in the EV segment could have far-reaching implications.

GM's announcement, shared with InsideEVs, highlighted the overwhelming success of the Bolt EUV over its smaller sibling, the Bolt EV. While exact sales figures weren't disclosed, it is widely believed that the Bolt EUV outsells the Bolt EV by a significant margin, roughly two-to-one. In the first nine months of this year alone, Chevrolet sold a combined total of 49,494 Bolt units, representing an astonishing 125% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

The Bolt's surge in popularity can be attributed, in part, to its competitive pricing, which was further reduced by the Inflation Reduction Act's electric tax credits. These credits, in combination with federal and state incentives, as well as dealer discounts, brought the Bolt's price tag down to around $20,000 for an EV offering a commendable range of 259 miles or 247 miles, depending on the model size.

Despite its sales success, the Bolt has been showing its age. The smaller Bolt EV debuted in 2016 and was later joined by the Bolt EUV in 2022. Its DC fast charging capability of 55 kW pales in comparison to more modern EVs, making it a slower option for adding range. Additionally, the older battery setup was reportedly unprofitable, leading to a temporary cancellation decision earlier this year.

However, GM had a change of heart, motivated by the Bolt's popularity and the potential for profitability with the adoption of the Ultium batteries and architecture, which underpin other new EVs in GM's lineup. The next-generation Bolt will not be a complete redesign but rather an updated version, featuring lower-cost LFP batteries, faster charging, advanced safety features, and other significant upgrades. Importantly, GM intends to maintain a pricing level similar to the current model, addressing a significant hurdle to wider EV adoption.

The decision to offer only the Bolt EUV in the upcoming generation is a strategic one, given the crossover-crazy American market. GM's choice to stick with this body style aligns with the Bolt's existing success. If the company can indeed deliver on the promise of affordability, the Bolt will continue as GM’s best-selling EV for a little while longer.
