Hyundai CES 2024

In a world that often seems obsessed with forward and reverse movements, Hyundai Mobis has taken a different approach to things. The Mobion concept, unveiled at CES 2024 is based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but promises an entirely new level of maneuverability, thanks to its innovative e-Corner System.

The Mobion concept features distinct bumpers and lighting units, too. Is it possible that we are actually looking at the future refreshed Ioniq 5? That would be one clever way for Hyundai to sneak in a new design to gauge the public’s response.

The lighting units serve a purpose beyond aesthetics, as they can convey information to pedestrians and fellow drivers. For instance, the rear lights are designed to alert other road users to the presence of a pedestrian at a crosswalk. Furthermore, the Mobion boasts a ground projection system that can illuminate the vehicle's direction on the ground, using a 360-degree spectrum of lights. It can even project crosswalk stripes, providing pedestrians with clear guidance on where to walk.

While the lighting innovations are impressive, the true star of the Mobion concept is the next-generation e-Corner System. Though specific details remain undisclosed, this system integrates an electric motor with steering, braking, and suspension functions for each wheel, allowing them to operate independently.

The result? A vehicle that can not only rotate its wheels but pivot, drive diagonally, and even perform a jaw-dropping 360-degree spin. This technology opens up exciting possibilities for handling and maneuverability, surpassing conventional vehicles in terms of agility and versatility.

The Mobion concept is equipped with two short-distance LiDAR sensors near the headlights, complemented by a long-distance LiDAR sensor in the front fascia. This configuration enhances lateral movement capabilities and significantly improves object recognition during complex maneuvers, such as diagonal lane changes.

Hyundai Mobis Vice President Lee Seung-Hwan highlighted that the Mobion concept represents technologies ready for immediate mass production. This suggests that the cutting-edge features showcased in this concept could find their way into Hyundai's production vehicles sooner than we might think.

The Mobion concept's capabilities are truly groundbreaking, making even the GMC Hummer EV's crabwalk feature seem rudimentary by comparison. By utilizing four small motors in each wheel, rather than a single large motor on each axle, Hyundai Mobis has achieved unprecedented levels of maneuverability and control.

While the Mobion concept is still in its experimental stages, Hyundai's ultimate goal is to make these revolutionary technologies accessible and practical for everyday use. Imagine the convenience of zero-turns, diagonal drives, and crabwalks becoming a reality in our daily commutes.

Some of the movements require the vehicle to come to a full stop and scrub the tires (against the conveniently polished floor). Other movements maintain continuity of a turning center-point. Experience a minor sensor error, spread eagle those tir...
