VW Jetta M6 comes with a bed layout because that’s what Chinese drivers want

Back in my day, car camping was all about pitching a soggy tent next to a rusty hatchback, eating cold beans, and praying a raccoon wouldn't steal my boots or leave a nasty surprise in the said tent. And for a very long time, things haven't changed much. But in China? It turns out China has a completely different idea of car camping. Why am I not surprised...

If you look at the latest wave of Chinese electric vehicles, you will notice an obsession with double beds. Not inside massive overland rigs or expedition trucks - in everyday commuter cars. Outdoor culture over there has exploded, and carmakers are bending over backward to turn boring interiors into mobile bedrooms.

Which brings me to FAW-Volkswagen's budget spin-off brand, Jetta. Back in 2019, Volkswagen launched Jetta as an independent marque in China, built on the simple idea of peddling cheap, cheerful petrol cars to younger first-time buyers. For a few years, the strategy worked like a charm. But the Chinese market moves at break-neck speed, and petrol commuters are now about as fashionable as a dial-up modem. Facing an existential slump - delivering just 47,811 petrol vehicles in the first half of 2026, down 13.1% year-over-year - Jetta had to adapt or face oblivion.

The answer to that sales squeeze was teased earlier at the Beijing Auto Show with the Jetta X concept SUV, but now we are seeing the true production pioneer. The Jetta M6 electric sedan arrives as the brand's first mass-produced battery-electric vehicle. It's a straight-faced effort by the German-Chinese joint venture to halt its market erosion and claim a slice of China's budget EV pie. Yet, true to market trends, Jetta decided this plain-Jane commuter needed an eccentric trick to stand out against local rivals.

The M6 drops straight into the very busy mid-size electric sedan arena - its body stretches 189.2 inches long, 73.5 inches wide, and 59.1 inches tall, and it sits on a 111 inches wheelbase. To give those proportions some context, it is 1.02 inches longer than the popular XPeng Mona M03 sedan. Tipping the scales at 3,589 lb, the M6 manages a reasonably light footprint for a mid-size EV.

Don't expect supercar drama here - Wolfsburg isn't giving this entry-level sedan absurd horsepower or even launch control. Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor available in two sensible outputs.

The standard version delivers 113 kW (152 hp) with a top speed limited to 103 mph, and the upgraded trim nudges power up to 145 kW (194 hp) and tops out at 107 mph. This really is an honest, fuss-free urban transport meant for daily routines, not for setting lap records.

Slide into the driver's seat, and the M6 looks like a masterclass in modern EV minimalism. You get a clean dashboard with a large floating touchscreen, a tiny digital instrument cluster, and a gear selector neatly stalked behind a two-spoke steering wheel. But look a little bit closer, and the cost-cutting engineering reveals itself. There are funky lever-style door handles and soft-touch upper plastics, but the rear bench misses out on a central armrest.

But here comes the surprise party trick - unlatch the front seat mechanisms, and the front seatbacks drop completely flat, aligning perfectly with the rear cushions to transform the cabin into a double bed. A genuine sleeping layout inside a modest family four-door. Typically, these lounge setups are reserved for electric crossovers marketed to an outdoorsy crowd and weekend glampers. Putting it in an affordable commuter sedan is surprisingly clever.

Whether city dwellers actually plan to sleep in their Jetta during lunch breaks or spend weekends slumbering under the standard panoramic sunroof is an open question - if they do, social media will be full of examples. But in a market where buyers are spoiled for choice, practicality catches eyes. If Jetta hopes to navigate its electric transition and regain lost ground in China, offering tired drivers a chance to literally put their feet up might be the smartest move Volkswagen has pulled off in a long time.
