Kia teases a hotter EV4 GT, but patience is required

Kia is not sitting still. Fresh off the success of its new EV3 and the large EV9 electric SUV, the Korean automaker is already planning its next performance move. The company is aggressively expanding its lineup of electric cars, and it seems no new model is safe from getting a high-performance "GT" badge.

The latest model in the spotlight is the Kia EV4, an electric car so new it has barely launched in Europe. Yet, Kia is already teasing the high-horsepower Kia EV4 GT variant, set for a 2026 debut. The "GT" name is serious business for Kia's electric cars. It's not just a sticker package.

The brand's current performance star is the EV6 GT, a crossover that quietly delivers a massive 641 horsepower. That's more power than many gasoline-powered supercars. Kia is also preparing to launch a GT version of its three-row EV9 SUV, which is expected to pack 501 horsepower. This sets a very high bar for the new, smaller EV4 GT.

To build excitement, Kia has released images of an EV4 GT prototype. The car is covered in a loud camouflage called the "GT Wrap." This black and neon-green digital pattern is designed to look like motion blur and, according to Kia, captures the "emotionality" of its performance models. This wrap isn't a one-time stunt, either. Kia plans to use this distinctive camouflage on all its future GT test cars, making them easy to spot.

Under the bright wrap, the company is testing a powerful new powertrain. The standard Kia EV4 comes with a choice of two battery choices: a 58.3 kWh pack and a larger 81.4 kWh pack. The GT model will almost certainly use the larger battery. It is also expected to have an all-wheel-drive system, with electric motors on both the front and rear axles. This setup is necessary to handle the expected power, which could land somewhere near the 500-horsepower mark.

Drivers expecting a wild-looking car with huge wings may be surprised. The "GT" philosophy for Kia's EVs has been about subtle design changes, not radical bodywork. Based on the prototype, the Kia EV4 GT will likely follow this path. Expect to see unique wheel designs and, peeking from behind them, Kia's signature acid-green brake calipers. The suspension will be slightly lower to improve handling, and inside, the acid-green theme will likely continue with stitching on the sport seats and other small details.

One important note for American buyers: the car in the teaser images is a hatchback. The EV4 hatchback will be sold in markets like Europe, but the United States will probably only get the EV4 as a four-door sedan. This means the hot GT version that arrives in American showrooms will have a trunk instead of a rear hatch.

Kia is clearly playing the long game, building hype before the car's official 2026 launch. For now, details on price, exact performance, and driving range remain a secret. The only thing Kia has made perfectly clear is that its electric car lineup is growing, and it is getting faster.
