Lucid Motors launches recruitment campaign in China

Lucid

Lucid Motors started its recruitment campaign in China in earnest, following the campaign in May looking for HR people. Now that those have been found the company has expanded the scope. Lucid did not comment on the number of people it is looking to hire, but the information digitization department alone has 14 positions listed.

That department specializes in adapting car’s displays to local markets - in this case it means translating all the information they display to Chinese. That can mean only one thing - Lucid is preparing to enter the Chinese market.

The company is looking to hire specialists from various fields - law, logistics management, hardware engineering, supply chains and retail. This move clearly indicates the company is preparing to start selling its Lucid Air and the upcoming Lucid Gravity vehicles in China.

Lucid Motors always kept the door to China open, from the start the company had Chinese investors with Tsing Capital putting money in as early as 2009. BAIC joined in 2014 and Yuting Jia took part in the round C financing, becoming the largest and second-largest investors, respectively.

China is the largest EV market in the world currently. So far this year the sales have passed 5 million “new energy” cars - meaning EV, PHEV and EREV. In November over 36% of all cars sold were either BEVs or hybrid vehicles.

Foreign companies tend to struggle in the Chinese market. For a while Tesla was bucking that trend, but in the last couple of months its sales began to slide and the company is trying to fight for its customers by introducing discounts and special offers.

Lucid Motors is a luxury car company and its cars despite competing with Tesla Model S are considered to be class above, more aligned with top offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes. The luxury market competition in China is fierce and it won’t be easy sailing, but Lucid doesn’t sell in huge numbers anyway and this may be its ticket to victory.
