Mercedes-Benz CLA Euro NCAP's safety crown for 2025

Mercedes

The results are in, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA has officially been named the safest car of 2025. In a year where dozens of new electric cars hit the market, this sleek German sedan stood out by earning a perfect five-star rating from Euro NCAP. The CLA won its own category, and it also scored higher than every other vehicle tested this year.

Safety is not a happy accident for this model. Mercedes-Benz built the new EV from the ground up with protection in mind. The car features a very strong frame that acts like a safety cage for the people inside. It also has special "crumple zones" designed to soak up the energy from a hit. Because of these features, it earned a near-perfect score of 94% for protecting adults and 89% for protecting children.

One of the coolest things about the CLA is how it looks out for people outside the car. Most electric cars are very quiet, which can be dangerous for people walking or riding bikes. The CLA scored a class-leading 93% in this area. It uses an "active bonnet" that pops up slightly if the car hits someone. This creates a cushion that helps prevent serious head injuries. The car also has a smart braking system that can spot cyclists and pedestrians early to help avoid a crash entirely.

For those curious about the size, the new CLA is slightly bigger than the older version. It measures 185.9 inches long, 73 inches wide, and 57.8 inches high. Under the floor, it carries a large battery with a usable capacity of 85 kWh. On a full charge, the car can travel up to 485 miles, and when you need a top-up, it can charge very quickly. Using a DC charger, you can get enough juice for 199 miles in just 10 minutes.

Of course, all this high-tech safety and battery power comes with a price tag. In the UK, the starting price for the electric CLA is $62,643. There are more expensive versions too - the AMG Line Premium starts from $70,000. That is quite a lot of money for essentially a small sedan, but Mercedes-Benz points out that they are providing the latest "Level 2" driving tools. These include systems that help keep the car in its lane and monitor the driver to make sure they are paying attention.

It is interesting to note that Mercedes-Benz keeps winning these awards. Last year, their E-Class was the top performer. By taking the crown again in 2025 with the CLA, the company is showing that EVs can be just as safe - if not safer - than traditional gas cars. As the brand gets ready to celebrate 140 years of making cars in 2026, it seems they are still finding new ways to keep everyone on the road a little bit safer.
