MG

MG's General Manager, Chen Cui, recently revealed that the updated MG4 EV will be the first mass-produced vehicle in the world to feature a semi-solid-state battery. The car will debut on August 5 and will also offer additional improvements.

Undoubtedly, the most notable upgrade is the battery tech. MG4 will use a battery pack supplied by QingTao Energy, which contains only 5% liquid electrolyte. The battery has passed rigorous safety testing, including a 360-degree puncture test.

The battery offers 13% improved performance in weather conditions at –7°C and provides a range of 334 miles as per the CLTC rating, with a 70 kWh capacity. The energy density is rated at 180 Wh/kg, which is approximately the same as the standard lithium-ion batteries most EVs currently use.

Although the MG4 will likely claim the title as the first mass-produced vehicle with a semi-solid-state battery, it's not the first vehicle to utilize such battery technology. Nio tried it out on its ET5 model and achieved a cruising range of 595 miles from its 150 kWh battery, which isn't particularly impressive. Given that the MG4 will have a 334 miles CLTC rating with the 70 kWh battery, it appears that semi-solid-state technology still has a long way to go.

In addition to the new battery, the MG4 will come equipped with a brand-new infotainment system, co-developed with Oppo, that supports voice commands, gestures, and phone app sync.

The MG4 is expected to cost between RMB 80,000 (~$11,000) and RMB 120,000 (~$16,400) in China, depending on the configuration.
