Nio

Electric vehicles are pushing boundaries, and Nio's entry into semi-solid-state batteries is generating quite a bit of publicity. YouTuber and EV enthusiast Ran recently embarked on a road trip spanning nearly 1,240 miles to put the new 150 kWh battery through its paces.

Nio's 150 kWh battery pack has solid electrolyte, while the electrodes remain traditional. Though not a full solid-state battery (those are still in the labs), this represents a significant leap forward in energy density. What's more, Nio is offering it as a rental option, allowing drivers to try it out without committing to a full purchase.

Ran's journey wasn't a leisurely cruise. Driving the smaller Nio ET5, he tackled mountainous terrain, indulged in creature comforts like seat massage, and even braved the chill with air conditioning - all factors that impact range. The result? A respectable 595 miles on a single charge. While some may scoff, consider the real-world conditions and the sheer size of the battery.

While the 150 kWh battery pack is a technological tour-de-force, Nio has a lot of room for improvement. A recent real-world test of a much bigger Lucid Air with a smaller 112 kWh battery pack delivered 523 miles and much better energy efficiency. Imagine if Lucid was using the 150 kWh battery - it would set a new world record.

But the real story here is about the evolution of EVs. Solid-state batteries promise faster charging, longer range, and increased safety. While still in their infancy, advancements like Nio's semi-solid-state battery are paving the way for a future where range anxiety is a relic of the past.
