Tesla plans to start selling its Cybercab to customers by the end of this year

Tesla

Tesla announced the driver-less taxi Cybercab in late 2024 and two years later, the company is already running test drives in Austin, Texas and the fleet is slowly growing bigger. The manufacturer is already producing some units at its Texas Gigafactory, but all of those units are destined for Tesla's own taxi fleet.

Tesla plans to start selling its Cybercab to customers by the end of this year

However, if production goes as planned, Tesla will start selling the Cybercab to other customers, who are willing to build fleets of their own. But that raises a question: how can Tesla sell a vehicle that's not technically road-legal?

The Cybercab is not just a driverless cab - it also lacks a steering wheel and pedals. Hence, it's entirely reliant on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, which is still in testing, and the unsupervised version of the software isn't available to the public. This in turn means whoever buys a Cybercab can't use the Unsupervised FSD software. Wouldn't that render the Cybercab unusable?

Tesla says the Unsupervised FSD will be made available to the wider public in the second quarter of 2027, which could mean that the company is planning to start shipments around the same time.

The company's VP of engineering said that most of the Cybercabs on the streets will be Tesla-owned and operated, as the rest will be owned by a small number of third-party companies that can buy entire fleets of the vehicle.
